In April 2024, a remarkable fishing achievement occurred in Massachusetts when John Stamas, a 30-year-old angler from Leominster, caught a stunning lake trout measuring 39 inches in length and weighing 20 pounds at Wachusett Reservoir.

This impressive catch has the potential to set a new state record in the freshwater catch-and-release category. Stamas, who was originally targeting bass, utilized a football jig along with bait-casting tackle equipped with 12-pound test fluorocarbon line to reel in this extraordinary fish. After successfully landing the trout, he opted to release it back into the water, contributing to the conservation of the species while also marking a significant moment in his fishing endeavors.
