Authorities say they have video of the man taking herring

MWPD updated their Facebook post following their initial statement twice as of 9:30 p.m..  Below is the most recent update.  The first two iterations of the MWPD statement reported that the herring was loaded into a “Company Truck registered to Nickerson Lumber Company out of Dennis Ma.”  Mid-Cape Home Centers has been urging media outlets and police not to name them in their stories.  Mashpee Wampanoag Police did remove the company name from their latest statement.

From the Mashpee Wampanoag Police Department :

“If you are NOT a Registered Tribal Member. It is ILLEGAL to do what this this guy did. Unless you are a Registered Member of a Native American Tribe you are NOT allowed to take Herring. This man came onto the Federally Recognized Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Reservation. He drove past 2 big signs, one on either side of the only entry way in, which let everyone know they are entering a Tribal Reservation.

We not only have this man on video netting Herring, we have very good pictures as well. Anyone can be charged after the fact. We do not have to be present for you to be charged! This information was sent to the local Ma. State Environmental Police.

It’s also illegal for non tribal members to NET Herring and take them form the River. A tribal member can not transfer aboriginal rights to another. Meaning a Native American can not transfer her/his aboriginal rights to a non Native American.”
