Last Two States with Sunday Hunting Prohibition

Hunting is prohibited on Sundays in Massachusetts, a practice that is unique among the states, as it adheres to a 19th-century law that still stands.

However, there is a current debate surrounding several bills that could potentially alter this longstanding regulation:

  1. Lift the ban entirely.
  2. Modify the ban to permit archery hunting on Sundays.

The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation has voiced its support for these bills. The origin of the Sunday hunting ban can be traced back to “blue laws,” which dictate which businesses are open and where alcohol sales are permitted on Sundays.

Some argue that Sundays offer the most safety for outdoor enthusiasts who are not hunters. Conversely, others believe that maintaining the law is crucial for public safety and to ensure non-consumptive nature users can enjoy the outdoors.

Currently, hunters are the only constituency in Massachusetts and Maine prohibited from participating in their pursuits on Sundays. All other outdoor enthusiasts are permitted to access public and private lands for their enjoyment to include anglers and recreational shooters.
