Hackett’s Pond, Hanover, MA

Hackett’s Pond is a quaint body of water nestled within the neighborhoods of Hanover, MA, making it somewhat of a hidden gem. Access to the pond is quite restricted, with only two designated entry points from the surrounding streets. For those who do not reside directly on the pond, the primary route is via Dillingham Way, which branches off from Main Street. This access point can feel a bit unconventional, as it resembles a private driveway leading to a small business. While parking there has never posed an issue for me, it does carry an air of awkwardness. Alternatively, a wooded path accessible from Hackett’s Pond Drive also leads to the water’s edge.

When it comes to fishing, there are several promising spots along the southern shore where I have had notable success. This area, which is the shorter side of the pond, offers a few fishing locations, particularly in the southeast corner where you can launch a small boat. Here, the presence of tall reeds and lily pads creates an ideal environment for using rubber worms or frogs as bait. The southern shore is dotted with additional lily pads and overhanging bushes that attract fish, especially since the pond is teeming with insects, making it easy to spot feeding fish on the surface. The southwest corner, where the dam is situated, features deeper waters and a large tree that hangs over the pond, which has proven to be the most fruitful fishing spot during my visits to Hackett’s. If you manage to get a boat out on the water, I recommend exploring the western shore, where two inlets and several patches of lily pads promise a lively fishing experience. Keep in mind that while this pond is relatively small, it offers plenty of action, though you shouldn’t expect to reel in any trophy-sized catches. Effective bait choices include watermelon and black worms with blue flakes, silver jerkbaits, and black-skirted spinnerbaits. Shore fishing is permitted, and while boat access is available, there is no formal boat ramp.
