An East Brookfield man shot and killed a bear that was attacking his dogs Tuesday, police said. Massachusetts Environmental Police are investigating the case, but East Brookfield police said the man probably will not be charged.

The bear was approximately 300 pounds. Police would not give the address where the bear was shot but said the town is very rural and bears are common.

A photo of the bear was posted on the East Brookfield Police Department’s Facebook page with a message that said, “This bear was shot by a nervous resident today. Don’t shoot a bear if it comes into your yard, call the police. We have means to get them moving that are not lethal.”
