  1. What time of day are deer most active? Most Active TimesDeer are crepuscular, which means they are most active at dawn and dusk. During these times, the deer’s wide eyes take in plenty of light to see their paths to their favorite food sources, at a point when most predators are struggling to see clearly.
  2. What do deer do during the day? -During the day the deer usually remain in the same bed for 3-4 hours, and then get up between 10:00 and 11:00 AM. When they get up they stretch, walk a few yards from the bed and urinate, wander around a bit while eating, not usually traveling more than a hundred yards, and then lay down again.
  3. Where do big bucks hide during the day? – Look for thickets, steep hillsides, deep draws, little swamps—out-of-the way spots where old boys might hide. The key to hunting one of these places is hidden, quiet access with a favorable wind, so you won’t blow out the bucks.
  4. What do you do when a deer stares at you? – What you should do is to stand absolutely still. Avoid direct eye contact; deer seem to have a sixth sense for being stared at and they don’t like it. It can take several minutes until the deer is convinced that you’re not an immediate threat and either will slowly move off or resume its normal activity.
  5. How far away can a deer smell you? -Under normal conditions, a deer can smell a human that is not making any attempt to hide its odor at least 1/4 mile away. If the scenting conditions are perfect (humid with a light breeze), it can even be farther.

This means that the level of detail whitetails see at 20 feet is what normal human vision can see back to 100 feet.

  10. Deer and pine trees?-Deer love to bed in pines. They love the young 4-10 year patches of pines that are really thick. Although this is great, those expansive plots of land with rows and rows of regular pines don’t hold as many deer because they can be seen from so far and there is no food or lower cover.
  11. What time should I be in the woods for deer hunting?-If I am only hunting the afternoon hours during the rut, I often try to settle in 4-6 hours before dark if hunting a heavily wooded cruising location, and closer to 3-4 hours prior to dark if hunting a food source.
